I just got back from GSMTR. I clocked my highway MPG by mile markers since my spedo is broke.

18MPG highway with a 87 4runner. SAS, 35MTR and 529 gears.

I can get about 21 on the highway with:

7mgte
91 octane
upgraded turbo
32x11.50's
4.10 gears

The lowest I've seen when I've been getting on it alot in the city is about 12 Smile

Mike, 21, that is pretty darn good. Can be hard to get those numbers with our poor aerodynamics

Yellow, 13, not soo good, bring that runner down to my house and we will fix that up. Our wives can go hang out while we fix it up.

Rob Help!

Gas mileage just got a whole lot more important, especially if I want to come to your house!

Yellow, I think the problem is the speed sensor with you. The supra ECU just doesn't like the 4cyl guage cluster speed sensor

I wonder if we should also hook up my EGR?

EGR will give you slightly better gas mileage...might bump it up 1-2 mpg

I had the 7mgte running without power to the black/orange wire on the ecu. I think it was the ignition switch. I ran it like this for about 10,000 miles. The idle control and engine check light did not work in this configuration, but it was consistantly getting better than 20 mpg on average. This was mostly state hwy routes with 55mph speed limits between towns, my daily commute of 40 miles one way. One week, I measured approximately 24mpg. This is with 4:10 gears and 35x12.50 wild country mud terrains.

I have since developed a bad counter shaft bearing and run mostly in fourth. I also finally connected the power wire on the ecu. The idle control and engine check light now work, but I can barely make 18 mpg anymore.

I know fourth gear is not helping. Would the Speed sensor contribute to the poor mileage? If so, what is the correction? Snip the Speed sensor wire?

YelloJacket, 24 mpg was correct, but it was conservative driving. Throw in some interstate driving with higher speeds and mileage dropped to 19-20 mpg range. That's not what I would consider bad, but now its seems closer to 15-18 with conservative driving in fourth and all the signals to the ecu that I can get from the truck.

Rob, have you determined the difference between the 4cyl cluster speed sensor and the Supra Speed sensor?

Would it be as simple as snipping the Speed sensor input, or maybe a reisistor inline?

Nate has an auto, Rod do you have an auto? I though manuals were suppose to get better mpg?

Rob and I just fixed my speed sensor issue last night. It turns out we just needed to splice the right wires together...
