I got quite a bit done today, well until I ran out of wire for the Mig.... ARGH
Time to tackle the cooling issue. Heres the comparision between the 1 1/4" thick, 2 Core, 4 Cylinder radiator and the 2" thick, 3 Core, V6 radiator.
I cut out the lower part of the core support as needed. But I still left the top main piece for the OEM hood latch.
And since the V6 radiator is taller and I need to move it forward, I had to cut out the factory front crossmember to replace it with a piece of angle. well since I've had the vehicle, the front crossmember has looked like this, so it needed to be replaced anyways....
And now with the new crossmember.
Now you might think that a piece of angle (3 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 1/4") is not enough support but this is a All-Pro bumper that bolts to the front of the frame and the body mounts, so it provides quite a bit of additional support. I might down the road add some rect. tubing to it to stiffen it up, but for now, this will be fine.
Then I took some 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/8" angle and made my vertical radiator supports. these are going to be welded to the top of the frame and not the sheetmetal core support. Doing that should stop the possiblity of the cab flexing around and changing my radiator clearances.
And now for mock up.... You can hardly even see the electric fan. Just want I wanted - A nice stock look!
Well the tarus fan (16") wouldn't fit with this bumper. so I ended up buying an 14" Hayden rapid-cool reversable electric fan and a 185 degree thermostat relay wiring kit from Knecths (~$163). So thats the fan thats shown here.
This fan is 3 7/8" thick and just clears the winch by 3/8".
And heres the engine clearances I ended up with. and this is with the factory hood latch, just like I wanted....

Well today it seemed like I couldn't get anything done! I just kept running into one problem after another and having to make parts runs......
The only major problem to tackle & finished today was the radiator hoses. I spent probably a good hour down at Napa looking at their wall of hoses to find something I could make work. Luckily I made a pretty good sketch of what I needed so I got what I needed the first time.
For the lower hose I ended up buying these two hoses and cutting and splicing them together. This worked out pretty good.
For the upper hose I bought this one to cut and rotate.
Here is how the upper one turned out. Pretty clean for what I'm dealing with.
And here is the lower one. I also plumbed my power steering into the tranny cooler in the radiator.
I also made a support bar for the lower bolt for the hood latch.
And this is how it pretty much looks like right now. Got the coil installed, Main battery, washer fliud, radiator overflow, dual battery isolator, power steering reserve, Winch, grill, etc....
I think I'm just about ready to put the hood back on.... after I finish mounting the other battery and weeding out some of the old 22RE wires on the driver side fender.

Well all I did today was work on the wiring. Cleaning up some of the old 22RE stuff and start soldering connections for the 7M. I probably got about 50% of it done.

Well I worked on the wiring some more today.... I think I got all the wiring finished in the passegner side kick panel. It looks a lot worse than it really is ... well I think so ...
A couple things that I changed was instead of using all the wiring for the 7M-GE Circuit Opening Relay, I just wired the existing one above the passenger side kick panel. my 4runner does not have a fuel pump relay or a fuel pump resistor, so I did have to use the one from the 7M-GE. I did not use a Starter relay like the Cressida US model, instead I wired it like the Canada Cressida that don't have a starter relay to eliminate a couple wires. Plus the 4runner does use one now either. But I did have to wire in a Starter Fuse which I did not show in my previous list.
So heres how it looks now....
And with the plastic trim installed.

Seems like I was out in the garage all today and I don't have anything to really show for it.... Most of the time was just cleaning up wires and dealing with little issues here and there.
I did get the battery tray for the second battery mounted. I also got the battery installed....

I some got presents today.........
First off, I finally got the Supra Oil-Pump! And that with the new toyota hardline and some gaskets I will be able to finally install the oil pan.
I had just enough room to slide the supra oil pump up into place with the 4runner on all fours.
Here is a side view of it.
And I also just barely had enough room to install the oil pan. And agian this is with the 4runner on all four tires under its own weight. Sure I could of jacked the 4runner up a bit but why....
I also finally got my 6 groove pulley for the York!!! Kenworth part number KA1480......
Hummmm....OBA......
And I also found this (1) wire in, 6 spade fuse holder at a 2-way radio store of all places. It was really just dumb luck on how I found it, but I did and thats the important part. I was almost ready to order one from SeaBass44 (12voltguy.com) but I found this one locally so I didn't have to wait for it. plus I think this fits a little better then the one's he offers for my application.
Anyways for this engine swap I'm now able to have dual bateries under the hood. So I decided to re-wire all my accessories to this one main fuse block, from the auxilliary battery, that will now be located under the dirver side kick panel. I'm also going to relocate the relays to the kick panel also. I normally have put this type of stuff in the engine bay, but it just looks ghetto to me having a bunch of single fuse holders, a row of relays stuck to the side of the fender with a spider web of wires between them. Plus I seem to always end up having to replace the relays due to moisture in the engine bay after going through Oregon Rain and Mud.

IT RUNS
At lunch I bought some oil and one of those new quick drain plugs because this oil plug on this pan is right above the diff and I hate bouncing oil off the diff when you have to change the oil. I installed the new drain plug. I filled the engine up with oil. I stripped the ends of the two remaining wires I needed to connect and shoved them in the EFI relay (in the correct spots of course). Connected the battery ground and turned the key. After about 10 seconds of cranking it fired right up!!!! I'm so freak'n amazed I got everything right the first time. I just can't believe it! I'm never that good! and considering this is my first motor conversion and dealing with that many wires I'm just shocked.... I honesty expected it least 2-3 wires in the wrong place. Even when I rebuilt my 22RE it took about three times of little stupid stuff I had to tweak before it would fire. But this fired right up and I even had it stripped down to the block just a week ago. So then I ran inside and grabbed the digital camera for a quick video.
So in the video its actually me turning the key for the very second time!!!Now granted I sound like a dork in the video and there is no exhaust (exhaust manifold only) and I haven't done any tuning yet and I don't have coolant in the radiator but it runs! Also you will notice the brake light is on in the video but thats because I haven't bleed the clutch master yet so the e-brake is pulled and the tranny is in neutral. also the RPMS look really high because this is a 4cylinder tach on a 6 cylinder engine. I just haven't modified the tack yet so it reads 150% of what the actual rpm is.
Now unfortionately I'm back at work and I put the video on a disc at the
house but I didn't test it befor eI left the house and the disc is bad.... so you guys are going to have to wait a bit for the video.....
But like a I said before:

Well the only thing that I've got done tonight is I made the connector tube for the exhaust manifold because I've got to watch my daughter tonight while the wife is out. The factory exhaust does the two tube into one about 2 feet after the manifold so I had to shorten that up for my crossover tube. I'm also going to run 2 1/4" exhaust on this motor. hopefully I can have it down to the exhaust shop by this weekend......I've gotten a quote of $200-$225 for the tube work and the muffler, I'm supplying the CAT.

rick you make me feel bad for not working on my truck as much as i want to, great to see this come so far so fast.
for reference i just paid 350 for a 3inch downpipe back exhaust w/ 3in tube all the way including brand new 3inch in/out cat and muffler
i was quoted $900 from another place to get it done full mandrel, i promptly declined THAT one
ohh and i like your front bumper, i think i'm going to copy the general look for the one i'm having made by a friend of mine _________________ 94 4runner

Well tonight I tried finishing up some of the minor stuff to make sure I could actually drive it down to the exhuast shop Friday morning....you know, coolant, oil, power steering, clutch, etc... Well I'm all set to get it down there but I still got a lot of the little stuff to go. Mostly because I'm going to rewire all my accessories with this dual battery install.
I did chain the motor mounts down. and I put a little twist to it. I put a couple chains at an angle trying to prevent the motor from moving backward. This should help stop the EGR from hitting the firewall or the plenum from hitting my brake booster.
I then did some HOT LAPS around the neighborhood with no hood or doors.... I did get it up to 55mph already which IS legal on that road... Man is this thing loud with no exhaust! Hard to get a performance compraision now, but after the exhaust is installed I can run the tests again. so far I'm really happy with it.
Now as for quirks, It has some that I need to work on. The EFI relay appears to have power and ground to it all the time. so I'm affraid to leave the battery connected otherwise it could drain the battery. Plus the relay is getting warm to the touch. Just something I'm going to have to figure out.
The engine doesn't want to idle very well at start up. you have to give it some gas for say the first 5 seconds before it takes the idle. again I haven't tuned anything yet since I'm waiting for the exhuast.
I did find a loose banjo fuel fitting which was leaking gas. That could of been bad - Really bad! I just forgot to tighten it when I was putting the engine back together. but luckily that was an easy fix and nothing bad happened!
Here is what it looks like now! Hood, Grill, Doors are all back on! and just to let you guys know, I didn't have to modify the hood any for that radiator.

Heres how the exhaust turned out. Ended up being $300 for everything from the collector back and I provided the Cat and the collector. Its all in 2 1/4" exhaust and a 'turbo' muffer was use to keep everythign nice and quiet - I'm just sick and tired of my previous loud exhaust systems.
I choose to run the exhaust under the bellhousing instead of under the oil pan because I still wanted access to the bell housing bolts and the oil pan bolts.
The installed did a really nice job at bracing every point on the exhaust system. I was pretty clear on how I wanted it done and he exeeded my expectation. Also even doing it this was there is no way the driveline can hit the exhust with dual cases even with my low lift.
And here is the crossover. nice and clean.
And he was able to tuck the cat up nice and high above teh 2" lifted Sky's crossmember.
And then down next to the the traction bar (it not quite as close as it looks) and dumping it out right behind the center of the axle. that last Jog in the exhaust is mostly for sound deadening and for getting the exhaust away from the springs.
As far as driving impression so far..... I REALLY like it! Feels torque off the line and this motor likes to REV! The power band just keeps going and going.... Its really nuts! And I still haven't gotten around to even checking the timing yet! The distrubitor is still in the same location I put it when I bolted everything back together. _________________ Project Quasimodo
