Well I finally found my wiring gremlin! I was getting a 1.3A drain on battery only after I connected the battery and started the engine once.... plus the heater fan would then have power to it after I pulled the key out..... And the other thing that keyed me into a problem was my EFI relay was getting warm to the touch...

Basically when I wired the EFI main relay I just spliced into the main harness where I needed to cut the existing wire and then splice into it. I was getting a weird power feed back though the system that after turned the key for the first time and it would engage the heater relay and then it would send power to the wrong side of the efi relay. It was a PITA to find but I finally did!!!

The other thing I worked on was adjusting the 4cyl tack to read the correct RPM for the 6 cylinder motor. Well that fix was real easyusing this info:

http://www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/tachmod.htm

But I had one heck of a time trying to figure out what the actual RPM of the motor was! I couldn't figure out how to hook up my dwell/tach meter to the coil to get it to read RPM.... Everytime I hooked it up I was only reading 150-200 RPM. I even borrowed two other meters and they did the same thing. So I finally gave up on that and I was able to wire in the donor car tach from the cressida instrument cluster. but the odd thing about that is that was only showning 500 rpm at idle..... to me it sounded more like 700 ish.... so anyway I then hooked up my 4runner tack and set it accordingly. I would still like to figure out what I was doing wrong so I can compared the actual rpms to the tach as say 3000 rpm.

So I basically spent all yesterday working on those problems.... doesn't feel like I did anything productive!

And here is going to be my last entry on my actual costs. I don't expect to be buying anything else for this motor swap. I've also still have about $200-$300 of more stuff off the motor that can be sold. so that would put my total cost for this motor swap and dual batteries around $1700-$1800.

nice work, and you get it done quick, took me over a year to do mine, but i waited 8 months for a friend of mine to heal after he broke his leg. I was scratchen my head a few times on the wiring stuff too.

The engine doesn't want to idle very well at start up. you have to give it some gas for say the first 5 seconds before it takes the idle. again I haven't tuned anything yet since I'm waiting for the exhuast.

My 5m-ge I got does the same thing. I have to put the gas pedal to the floor then it bogs sometimes as low as 300 rpm for a few seconds then starts reving and catchs the idle. Only does it when the engine's cold.

The low rpm on start up is no longer happening..... I think it just had to do with the computer learning itself.....

Well I finally got around to cleaning up and looming the wires.

I also got the computer mounted.

And I was able to wire up most of my accessories. but still need to loom a couple more wires in the driver side kick panel and drive side fender.

So far I have put about 70 miles on this engine. Power is great at lower speeds. Maintaning 65-70 mph on the freeway the throttle is only open 15-20% in 5th gear. Before with the 22RE it would be 80-85% WOT in 4th gear. But over 75mph the engine feels sluggish - Sure thats faster than I should be going but I'm just trying to find all the quirks and bugs in the engine.

One think I did notice when I was timing the engine, I would short the computer and the timing wouldn't change. So I ned to look into that more...

Also the water temp gauge is constantly cycling going up and down. I didn't replace the thermostat, but I think I should with one that is a bit cooler than stock. and on top of that I keep blowing my 25A fuse for my electric fan, so I need to bump that up a size.

Also for some reason my death wobble is now worse than before! So I've got a couple new Irok's coming for the front axle but unfortionately they're out about a month.....

COMPARISON PERFORMANCE TEST RESULTS!

The baseline tests where done right before I pulled the 22RE out of the 4runner 4500 lbs +/- 10 lbs with an empty gas tank, built 22RE, W56, Dual cases, 1/4" thick drivelines, 5.29 gears, 36" Bias ply IROKS at 15 psi.

I have not weighed the 4runner after the swap (I'm expecting it weighs 80 lbs more due to the engine) and I now have a 1/2 tank of gas (another 50 lbs). Also I have two slow leaks in the Iroks probably due to crap in the bead, So the tire pressure is lower than before.

You won't believe some of these numbers.... Also keep in mind that I timed these myself with a the second hand on my watch. So they are not very accurate but the do show a very impressive increase in performance!

Test #1
0-40 MPH on flat ground
22RE - 10.5 seconds average (2 runs)
7MGE - 7.5 seconds averaage (2 runs) {40% increase}

Test #2
0-60 MPH on flat ground
22RE - 23 seconds average (3 runs)
7MGE - 13.5 seconds average (2 runs) {70% increase}

Test #3
Hillside Drive - mild hill close to the house
22RE - Top speed at crest was 48 MPH in 3rd gear
7MGE - Top speed at crest was 57 MPH in 3rd gear {19% increase}

Test #4
Sunset Drive - really steep hill close to the house
22RE - Top speed at crest was 31 MPH in 2nd gear
7MGE - Top speed at crest was 47+ MPH in 3rd gear* {52%+ increase}
* = I had to let off the gas on one corner of this hill because I was going too fast and actually started to power slide on dry pavement!

Also something to note is that my death wobble is worse now after the swap which is probably scuffing some speed off the results with the 7MGE.

And heres some final dimensions.

Ground to the bottom of the front crossmember.
22RE - 25"
7M-GE - 25"

Ground to the bottom of tranny bellhousing.
22RE - 23"
7M-GE - 24"

Ground to the bottom of the oil pan.
22RE - 20 1/2""
7M-GE - 23 1/4"

Ground to the bottom of Sky's Crossmember.
22RE - 19 3/4"
7M-GE - 20 1/2"

Ground to bottom of Transfer Case Parking Brake Mount.
22RE - 22 1/2"
7M-GE - 22 7/8"

Well these dimensions puzzled me at first because there is no way I gained that much clearance under the rig with the same amount of drive train lift as before. Until I remembered I didn't check the air pressure in my tires on the previous measurement... So these dims are much harder to intepret than by first glance. Basically the pan on the 7M doesn't hang down as far as the one on the 22RE and the 7m appears to be mounted on the frame rails higher since these more clearance under the bellhousing.

Also I was able to borrow a nice digital timing light with a built in tach. I adjusted the POT switch I wired into the M- and M+ terminals on theback of the tach to match at 4000 rpm... then when I check it back at idle, it was 400 rpm off! actualy RPM was 750 and the tach said 1150 RPM ARGH..... So thats a big no go. Guess I'm just going to swap a V6 SR5 cluster in there and be done with it! Anybody got one for cheap.....

If you guys remember correctly, the 4Runner weighed 4500 lbs +/- 10 lbs with me in the driver seat and a emtpy tank of gas. Well I just weighed the 4runner at the same conditions..... me in the driver seat and an empty tank of gas....Its still 4500 lbs +/- 10 lbs. The only thing that is not installed on the 4runner is that during the conversion was my new OBA and I removed the AC during the conversion. So I would have to say that a 7m swap will only gain you 30 lbs.......

Also for the first tank of gas I was pretty hard on fuel consumption with my new found power! I got 12.7 MPG which is basically right where I was at before with normal driving of the 22RE! So I'm expecting better mileage on the next tank.

Yesterday, I finally got a compression tester extension so I could do the comp. test on the 7M. See with these Heads, you need one of these extensions because the spark plug hole is impossible to get down into to tighten the tester into.

Results:
145, 145, 145, 140, 142, 145

I don't think I've ever seen a motor that consistant.... and I am actually amazed that this was a junk yard motor with a blown head gasket!

As for the spark plugs, they are running lean to me. So I will have to probably tweak with the mixture using the AFM. These are OEM spec NGK plugs have around 150 miles on them.

Wow....Wow....and Wow again.

man, this is the most complete set of pictures and info for any swap I have seen.

You should really do a write up and include some pictures.

Well done, and congrats.

You ever going to do turbo? Those 0-60 times will drop by about 50%. Very Happy

Question This post is way more extensive than any write-up since it literally shows my day by day progress.... your more than welcome to use this info for a write-up on your site......

Naw, I'm kinda concerned right now about breaking stuff. I hate trail carnage! and I'm the type of person that likes push the vehicles as far as I think they can make it. If it had a turbo - I know my carnage list would increase!

Second tank of Gas......

155 miles and 11.92 galons

13.0 MPG, Not as good as I would like to see but I still need to look into my timing problem. I don't think the ECU is advancing the spark with changes in RPM.

3rd tank of gas now .....

174 miles and 12.99 gallons = 13.4 MPG

Well I definately see a trend here in my MPG.... I hope I can figure it out because I really should be getting more!

Well, this weekend was its real test. I drove up to TSF (~3 hours away) to run trails all day and then back home. It ran great all day long. Curently the cooling system isn't quite right. Running down the freeway in the cooler morning temperature the engine temp gauge was constantly cycling up and a down. But in the afternoon in the warmer temps it just stayed in the same spot (just below horizontal postion on the gauge). If I was running higher rpms and low speed the temp would climb until the electric fan kicked on. And then it would drop back down to normal and stay there as long as the fan was on. so I just left the fan override switch in the on position when I was on the trails so I didn't have to watch the gauge constantly going up and down. if I was on the gravel roads, I could turn the fan off and it would be fine. so it looks like I need to get a different thermostat and/or a different thermo switch for the fan because its not quite right, but I DO have enough cooling power with this V6 Truck radiator. I just don't like the temps cycling up and down.

As for motor performance, it seems like you can't lug this engine down like a 22R Series. if your keep it about 1200 rpms or more your fine, but any lower than that it seemed to stall out pretty easy. I stalled it out ALOT on takeoffs because I'm just not use to slipping the clutch that much compared to the old motor. Good thing I didn't use a ceramic clucth!!!

For gravel road running, this motor is awesome! I was able to keep the rpms right around 3000-4000 on the roads and on any corner you could lay into the throttle and start power sliding. The throttle around this rpm is also really smooth which is great for drifting because you could stay in control and really control the slide with just how much thorttle you give it. It was night and day different then the 22RE I had. With that you had to work on getting the slide to start with a small jerk of the wheel. and you only had so much power available. And the power band up in the high rpms is REALLY long. You have consistant power all the way up to 6000 rpm. and then when you shift you still have more power. with the 22R series, if you shift out of your gear, your pretty much bogging down and screwed! You can run the roads at lower RPM just fine, its just not as fun for drifting.

I tried some steep hill climbs and really liked how it felt. With this motor if your around 2000 rpm running a steep climb and want to accelerate, you can! just lay into teh throttle a little more and away you go. With the old motor I could do this but no where nearly as fast .

Heres some pictrues from the day....

TSF OHV, 7-up

TSF OHV, Little Crusher

But then on the way home all hell broke loose

Coburg rest stop on I-5

Well so much for this junkyard 7M, I lost the bottom end! Sounds like a rod bearing to me. Luckily I was only about 40 miles away from my house and I was able to make it to a rest stop! So I called up Wheelie_Pete for a tow to his house which was about 10-15 miles. Only to get pulled over my the Finest Coburg Highway Police. (These guys suppliment their city police budget with speed traps on I-5. The state actually had to put a limit on them because they where pulling in too many $$$) Anyways we where informed that it was illegal to tow with a tow strap! go figure...... in the end he said that he wasn't going to cite us, but he said someone else could, basically he said he was going to look the other way. Which was cool.... but it sucked to get harassed like that when all your trying to do is get your junk off the highway!! So after we got it to Petes, I was able to borrow Sky's Turbo Desiel and Trailer @ 11:00pm at night to get the 4runner back to my house. Its not WHAT you know, but its WHO you know!!! Thanks SKY!

So the bottom end is toast in the 7M and luckily I have about 10 days left on my warranty from the wrecking yard so I dealing with them to see whats the next step!
